Hot Debate Evolves Around ‘Oldest Soccer Club’ Claims

Staking claim to the name of the oldest professional soccer club across the world builds with it a huge amount of pride and potential income. Ever since the birth of the sport plenty of years ago in England, there have always been many organizations that have claimed the brand of the oldest professional club. The Football Association was started in England in 1863 with the standardizing of the laws of the game taking place before the very first competitions were created.

The title of the world’s oldest professional club is now being claimed the Premier League team, the Crystal Palace Football club. The Sheffield FC, having been formed in 1857 took the title from the Notts County team as they were formed in 1862. It may turn out that the London team could be the oldest professional soccer club as Peter Manning, the Crystal Palace official historian has discovered evidence to support this.

The Crystal Palace team was formed in 1861 as reported by the Sky Sports. The club initially formed as part of the world fair held on the Crystal Palace site under the leadership of the Crystal Palace Company and began playing games in 1862.

The Crystal Palace team was initially formed to play cricket and would schedule soccer games around the summer cricket season. It was originally thought the soccer team was disbanded in 1876 to avoid damaging the cricket pitch. The team continued to play, according to Manning over the apparent 20 year break before starting to play in the dedicated soccer stadium built by the Crystal Palace Company.

Peter Manning was praised by Crystal Palace Chairman Steve Parrish for his impressive work on the history of the club that could add even more prestige to the Premier League team. The club has a rich history that dates back to the 1863 formation of The Football Association and played in the first FA Cup competition in 1871. The history of the Crystal Palace Football Club starts when the team merged with the historical London County Cricket Club.
